Brief Project Background:

NLight was commissioned by Inca Orchids to implement a new horticultural lighting system in their greenhouse in Nootdorp, the Netherlands. Specializing in the cultivation of 9 and 12 cm orchid potted plants, particularly cambria and miltonia varieties, Inca Orchids wanted to transition to a more sustainable cultivation method in the coming seasons.

The upgraded LED installation involved replacing 800 SON-T HPS lamps with 397 new RV-1000 fixtures from NLight. The primary goal was to reduce energy costs in the greenhouse while maintaining existing light levels. By using a highly efficient spectrum in combination with our patented lens technology, we were able to achieve the desired results with significantly fewer fixtures than the market standard. This not only reduced the total project costs, but also optimized the installation costs.

The implementation of the new systems took place during the cooling phase of the orchid growth. This strategic choice was driven by the lower thermal output of LED lights compared to SON-T lights in these areas. This allowed the grower to simultaneously reduce the operational costs of the cooling system and benefit from the energy savings that the LEDs offered.

We wish the team at Inca Orchids all the best in their transition to LED and we look forward to seeing how the new lighting system enhances the production of beautiful orchids for retailers worldwide.
