Vitacress Herbs, one of the UK’s largest growers of basil and other potted herbs, is committed to reducing its carbon footprint while delivering fresher, longer-lasting products. At their Chichester greenhouse, they partnered with NLight to trial a new LED system designed to balance energy efficiency with crop quality.
PROJECT Details
Vitacress needed a solution that could cut energy costs while maintaining light quality for delicate herbs. By replacing 52 SON-T HPS lamps with just 24 RV1000 fixtures, NLight delivered the same light levels with fewer units - reducing installation costs, lowering cooling demand, and supporting more sustainable production.
GREENHOUSE SIZE:
Commercial herb greenhouse
LOCATION:
Chichester, United Kingdom
Control System:
High-output spectrum with patented lens technology
Fixtures Installed:
24 × RV1000 (replacing 52 × 1000W SON-T HPS)
Objective:
Reduce energy and cooling costs while extending product life
Outcome:
Same light levels with fewer fixtures, reduced cooling demand, extended shelf life for herbs, and lower operational costs
Crop Types:
Basil and assorted potted herbs
Sustainability Focus:
Lower energy use, reduced carbon footprint, and fresher products for UK retailers
SUSTAINABILITY MEETS FRESHNESS
For Vitacress, innovation means more than efficiency - it’s about delivering better herbs to retailers and consumers while reducing environmental impact.
EFFICIENCY AT SCALE
Fewer RV1000 LEDs replaced double the number of HPS fixtures, cutting both energy and installation costs.
LOWER COOLING DEMAND
Reduced thermal output minimised cooling needs, lowering operational costs in the vegetative phase.
FRESHER, LONGER-LASTING CROPS
Optimised light and reduced stress extended the shelf life of herbs.
COMMITTED TO CARBON REDUCTION
The LED upgrade supports Vitacress’s wider sustainability initiatives across its UK operations.
